So as a comparison I find the corruption threshold to be much better than 1000 gold in terms of access to upgrades. This actually increases as you get further in the run and things increase in gold cost but not corruption cost. The general rule is 20 corruption is worth a bit more than 500 gold.

The increased threshold means it takes 100 more total corruption before you hit the 5th curse. Consider that gold and corruption are basically interchangeable.
